Flooding in Paris (1910)

Flooding in Paris ( Fr. Crue de la Seine de 1910 ) occurred in late January - February 1910. Due to heavy winter rains, the Seine and its tributaries, Yonne , Luen and , rose and flooded a significant part of the city through tunnels, sewers and sewers , while the river itself in Paris did not overrun the coast, but in towns east and west of the capital, for example, Ivry-sur-Seine , , Saint-Denis , Épinay-sur-Seine and Gennevilliers , came out. Since the water rose quite smoothly, there were no dead.

On January 20, the movement of many ships on the river was stopped, as some ships could not pass under the bridges because of the rising water. The first signs of an impending catastrophe were noticed on January 21: the river level began to rise faster than usual, the factory Usine de la Société Urbaine d'Air Comprimé stopped working on the same day. Over the next week, several thousand people were evacuated from their homes, the economic life of the city almost froze. Policemen, firefighters and soldiers sailed in the streets in boats, rescuing those who did not want or did not have time to leave their homes. Evacuated were placed in government offices, schools and churches. Among other things, the Gare du Musée d'Orsay railway station and half of the subway turned out to be flooded. To walk around the city, wooden bridges were urgently built [1] . On January 28, water reached a maximum: 8.68 meters above normal levels, by this day hundreds of streets, about 20,000 houses and about 22,000 basements had been flooded. The water was not only icy, but also heavily polluted, as it washed away many latrines. After that, the water also gradually began to leave, which took 35 days.

The economic damage from the flood amounted to about 400 million francs in gold, which at the current exchange rate is about 1.6 billion euros , in addition, 50 million francs in gold went to help the victims. The flood became the largest after 1658, when the water rose to the level of 8.81 m [2] . If such a flood occurred now, about 500,000 houses would be flooded, hundreds of thousands of people would be left homeless [3] .

Against the backdrop of the Paris flood of 1910, the action of the cartoon " Monster in Paris " takes place.
