The Battle of Korsakov is a naval battle of the Russo-Japanese War , which took place on August 7 ( 20 ), 1904 . The battle thwarted the attempted escape of the Russian cruiser Novik to join the Russian forces in Vladivostok after the Russian Pacific Squadron was scattered after the battle in the Yellow Sea. The Japanese cruiser Tsushima approached the bunkering site in Korsakov, on Sakhalin Island . After attempting to escape and battle with Tsushima, the Novik crew sank their ship before Tsushima and the newly arrived cruiser Chitose were able to defeat the Russian ship.
