Blues-rock is a hybrid musical genre, a kind of rock music that combines elements of the blues and rock styles. The blues-rock sound is based on an electric guitar , a bass guitar and a drum kit , and the sound of an electric guitar is subject to distortion “ overdrive ”, usually with the help of a tube guitar amplifier .

Blues-rock began its development in the mid-1960s in England and the USA as what music historian Piero Scaruffi called "rhythm and blues performed by white European musicians" [3] . English groups such as The Who , Yardbirds , Led Zeppelin , Animals , Cream and Rolling Stones , experimented with the music of the early American bluesmen Haulin Wolfe , Robert Johnson , Jimmy Reed , Muddy Waters, and others [4] . Early blues-rock bands “tried to play long and complex improvisations typical of jazz records,” but by the mid-1970s blues-rock became heavier and based on riffs [4] . In the wake of the popularity of rock music, “in the early 1970s, the border between blues rock and hard rock was barely noticeable.” [4] Later, in the 1980s and 1990s, blues-rock performers returned to blues roots, and some, such as the Fabulous Thunderbirds or Stevie Ray Von , "flirted with the status of rock stars" [4] .

History

Initially, the genre appeared in England, where musicians like Alexis Korner and John Mayal created groups that acted as training grounds for future stars of the genre, such as Free , Savoy Brown , and early compositions of Fleetwood Mac . At the same time, American musicians like Johnny Winter , Paul Butterfield and the Canned Heat band are among the pioneers of blues rock.
The revolutionary electric performance of blues by Jimi Hendrix (a member of many American rhythm and blues and soul bands in the early 1960s) and his trio " Jimi Hendrix Experience " and " Band of Gypsys " had a wide and long-lasting impact on the development of blues rock especially for guitarists .
Another guitar player with a strong influence on this genre is Eric Clapton . His work in the 1960s and 1970s with John Mayal and the Bluesbrakers group, The Yardbirds group, in the Blind Faith , Cream , Derek And The Dominos supergroups, as well as a long solo career, meant a lot to recognizing blues rock as an independent genre.
In the late 1960s, another former member of The Yardbirds, Jeff Beck, with his band Jeff Beck Group , which became popular in the United States and England, brought heavier hard rock sound to blues rock .
The third graduate of The Yardbirds, guitarist Jimmy Page , created the band New-Yardbirds , which soon changed its name to Led Zeppelin . During the first half of the 1970s, the Led Zeppelin group dominated the global blues-rock scene. Other blues-rock musicians who influenced the blues-rock scene of England in the 1970s included Rory Gallagher and Robin Trover .
Blues-rock was one of the first genres to take root in Russian rock . In it, the Time Machine group often worked, as well as Shanghai , the Zoo , the Crematorium , among others.
