Born April 8, 1859 in Jacmel , before becoming a politician, was a lawyer.

After the death of his predecessor, Tancred Auguste, on May 2, 1913, Senator Michel Orest was elected May 4 by the National Assembly as president.

He became the first civilian president of Haiti (all the other presidents from 1804-1915 were generals ), although his rule was not long [1] .

Adhered to reformist policies, like his successor, Orest Zamor , relied on forces loyal to the landowning elites.

Without military support, he could not suppress the revolutionary unrest that swept the country. January 27, 1914 was forced to resign and left the country in a German warship. He fled first to Colombia , then staying in France .

He died of uremia on October 28, 1918 during a visit to New York .
