North America: Mexico (Baja California Norte), USA ( Arizona , California , Oregon ), up to 1500 m. Fly from May to August [1] .
Description
Butterflies of medium size ( wingspan from 38.0 to 43.5 mm) with a characteristic notch along the outer edge of the hind wing at its apex between veins M1 and M3. The main color of the wings is gray or brown, with a weak diffuse spotting of brown color. Caterpillars feed on leaves of woody plants, for example, shrubs of the genus Tolokanyanka ( Heather family). The species was first described in 1899 by the American entomologist John B. Smith (Rutgers, College, New Brunswick, New Jersey , USA) under the original name Hadena ethnica , and its valid status was confirmed during a generic audit in 2015 by American entomologists Thomas Mustelin ( Tomas Mustelin , San Diego Natural History Museum, San Diego , USA ) and Lars G. Crabo ; Washington State University, Bellingham, USA) [1] [2] .
