Biography
Matiko Hasegawa was born on January 30, 1920 on Kyushu Island, in Saga Prefecture . She started drawing at the age of 2 years [1] . In 1935, her family moved to Tokyo after her father died [2] . In 1937, after graduating from school, Hasegawa began to study drawing with the artist Suiho Kawati [3] , and a year later her first manga, Tanuki no omen, was published in Shojo Club magazine [2] . Sazae-san Hasegawa began to draw manga in 1946 [4] . Initially, it was published in the Fukuoka newspaper, and then in Asahi Shimbun [2] . Thanks to this manga, Hasegawa became one of the most famous mangaka in post-war Japan [3] [5] [6] .
Although the main character of the Sazae-san manga is a married woman, Hasegawa herself did not get married during her lifetime [1] . Together with her older sister, she organized her own publishing company Shimaisha [2] . She died on May 27, 1992. For her manga, the Sazae-san mangaka was posthumously awarded the Prime Minister of Japan Prize [1] . The Art Museum of Matiko Hasegawa [7] was opened in her honor.
