Biography
Petty decided to start a musical career after attending the Ed Sullivan show , where he first saw the performance of The Beatles (1964). According to the musician, the event has changed his life [5] .
He and his band The Heartbreakers appeared on the horizon of American rock music in 1976, when the eponymous album was released. The first success the musician learned in the UK , where critics ranked him as a “ new wave ”, while Petty himself insisted that his work is a logical continuation of the heritage of The Byrds and The Rolling Stones .
The third album of his group, “ Damn the Torpedoes ” ( 1979 ), reached the 2nd place in the United States and held on the 1st place in the UK until the release of the legendary “ The Wall ” from Pink Floyd . In 1981, Petty and Stevie Nix, a duet from Fleetwood Mac , went on sale - “Stop Draggin 'My Heart Around”. Musical critics compared Petty to Bob Dylan , Neil Young , and Bruce Springsteen . However, it’s impossible to count Petty as a conservative: for example, he began shooting music videos for all his singles as one of the first rockers.
In 1987, Petty recorded several musical compositions with his idol, Bob Dylan, and the following year they became members of The Traveling Wilburys supergroup , created by George Harrison , Roy Orbison and Jeff Lynn . In 1989, with the support of The Heartbreakers and friends from The Traveling Wilburys, Petty released the first solo album, “ Full Moon Fever ” (3rd place on the Billboard 200 ), the main hit from which was the song “Free Fallin '” (7th place on the Billboard Hot 100 ).
In the 1990s, Petty worked with fashion producer Rick Rubin . The second solo album (“ Wildflowers ”) was released in 1994 , the third (“ Highway Companion ”) - 12 years later. They all enjoyed success. Recently, Petty is known for his criticism of American showbiz . He sees the cause of the crisis of rock music in the commercialization of radio stations and in the disappearance of independent transmission networks.
In 1997, he played the minor role of the mayor of a small town, actually a cameo, in Kevin Costner ’s film The Postman . In the film, the main character notes that "at one time he [Tom Petty] was famous."
In early 2014, Petty announced the release of a new album. July 29, 2014 saw Hypnotic Eye, the 13th studio album of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers .
On October 2, 2017, Petty was found unconscious in his Malibu home. Doctors found that he had a complete cardiac arrest [6] . The musician was taken to the hospital, and then connected to a life support system. CBS reports that it was subsequently decided to shut down the system.
