Petty decided to start a musical career after attending the Ed Sullivan show , where he first saw the performance of The Beatles (1964). According to the musician, the event has changed his life ^[5] .

He and his band The Heartbreakers appeared on the horizon of American rock music in 1976, when the eponymous album was released. The first success the musician learned in the UK , where critics ranked him as a “ new wave ”, while Petty himself insisted that his work is a logical continuation of the heritage of The Byrds and The Rolling Stones .

The third album of his group, “ Damn the Torpedoes ” ( 1979 ), reached the 2nd place in the United States and held on the 1st place in the UK until the release of the legendary “ The Wall ” from Pink Floyd . In 1997, he played the minor role of the mayor of a small town, actually a cameo, in Kevin Costner ’s film The Postman . In the film, the main character notes that "at one time he [Tom Petty] was famous."

In early 2014, Petty announced the release of a new album. July 29, 2014 saw Hypnotic Eye, the 13th studio album of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers .

On October 2, 2017, Petty was found unconscious in his Malibu home. Doctors found that he had a complete cardiac arrest ^[6] . The musician was taken to the hospital, and then connected to a life support system. CBS reports that it was subsequently decided to shut down the system.
