Two characteristic features of Dr. Hibbert, turned into repeating jokes of the animated series, are his causeless giggles [3] and a frequent change of image in the past: in the Simpsons recollections of the past he appears with various unusual hairstyles characteristic of representatives of various nationalities , faiths and subcultures .

The name was given to Hibbert by Jay Cohen, named after his girlfriend Julia Hibbert - initially the doctor was conceived as a female character [4] . Character design was developed by Matt Graining in collaboration with Sam Simon [5] .

Biography

The character was created as a parody of Dr. Cliff Huxtable from The Cosby Show on NBC ; Like Huxtable, Hibbert often wears ugly sweaters. [6]

Julius Hibbert is one of the African American characters along with Carl Carlson , Drederick Tatum, Judge Roy Snyder and Police Officer Lou. He attends the Milhouse of Sand and Fog , where he sings gospels with enthusiasm.

He graduated from the medical department of Johns Hopkins University ( Johns Hopkins University ). In order to pay for his studies, he worked as a stripper under the pseudonym Malcolm Sex (referring to the name Malcolm X ), and later he taught a striptease class at Springfield Adult Education Center (“ CE D'oh ”).

He is a member of the Springfield branch of Mensah [7] . In addition to Springfield Hospital, he also receives patients at the Kalmwood Psychiatric Hospital. Unlike Dr. Nick , Hibbert is a competent doctor, almost always he gives his patients objective recommendations: for example, he categorically refused to help Homer grow fat to become disabled (“ King-Size Homer ”), and also urged Bart not to become a stunt performer ( “ Bart the Daredevil ”); nevertheless, some details indicate that Hibbert has a certain cynicism and excessive concern for his own benefit, in addition, and his competence is sometimes questioned. Below are some cases.

  • When Bart temporarily lost his hearing after being vaccinated, Dr. Hibbert tricked Homer into signing a no-complaint ( Bart-Mangled Banner ).
  • He may not have a license to practice medicine ( Wild Barts Can't Be Broken ).
  • He pricked Homer morphine at his request (" Children of a Lesser Clod ").
  • When Marge talked him out of buying a house ( Realty Bites ), he said that he would write her any prescription she asked.
  • In the series “ Don't Fear the Roofer, ” he hit Homer with a clapper on the head, treated him barbarously, and tricked Marge into rejecting the claim.
  • When Marge Simpson was waiting for the third unplanned child (“ And Maggie Makes Three ”), he said that for a healthy child you can help out $ 60,000, although he stated that it was just a test when Marge was horrified.
  • He refused to remove the flower from Homer's head, explaining that he was a doctor, not a gardener (“ D'oh-in in the Wind ”)
  • In the Bye Bye Nerdie series, he complained about Homer Simpson’s child protection business, which could have led him to bankruptcy.
  • He said that coronary artery bypass grafting for Homer would cost $ 30,000, and when Simpson had a heart attack again from this news, did not help him, but only increased the price by another $ 10,000.
  • For the sake of money, he starred in an advertisement for the pharmaceutical company Pfizer (“ The Last Temptation of Homer ”).

He often plays out his patients, and also gives them brochures with titles like “So you ruined your life.” (Marge gave when she found out that she was pregnant with Bart) or “So, you are going to die.” (When Homer ate poisonous fish puffer). Hibbert’s quote is well known: “You have 24 hours to live. Good, 22. Sorry to keep you waiting so long. ” [8]

Owns a poodle named Rosa Barks (a reference to the name of the African American rights activist Rosa Parks ). When the dog got puppies from Little Helper Santa Claus , he gave them to the Simpsons, and Bart and Lisa had to go home and give puppies to the townspeople. Puppies were taken by Krusty , gardener Willy , Snake Jailbird and others.

He has a driver’s license, drives different cars: on a green Mercedes-Benz G500, he shot down Snowflake Second in the series “ I, D'oh-Bot ”; in Bart's Girlfriend , he mentioned that he had left the keys to his Porsche inside the patient; in the " My Sister, My Sitter " was the silver Volvo 850; in the Wild Barts Can't Be Broken series, he and his family use motorcycles as a means of transportation.

For political reasons - a Republican ; he can be seen at republican party meetings with Mr. Burns , Krasti , Rich Texan and Rainer Wolfcastle .

Engaged in judo (" My Sister, My Sitter "), has a red belt.

Accustomed to sweets, which can be seen in the Sweets and Sour Marge series.

Family

Julius and Bernice Hibberts

Julius Hibbert has a long-lost twin brother, the director of the Shelbyville orphanage ( Oh Brother, Where Art Thou? ), All of whose attempts to find his brother were unsuccessful, as Homer did not pay attention to the director's words. Also, his lost brother may have been Murphy Bloody Gums - this is evidenced by the dialogue:

- Hibbert: “I never saw my brother, he, like, a jazz musician ...”

- Murphy: "And I never saw mine - he, like, is a doctor and giggles all the time for no reason ..."

(" 'Round Springfield ").

Hibbert is married to African-American Bernice [9] (this name was first mentioned in the Homer vs. The Eighteenth Amendment and is used later; in earlier episodes, Hibbert's wife was called Sylvia), which is very similar to him both in appearance and behavior: she even laughs the same way Julius does. They have at least three children. Bernice may be addicted to alcohol: she fainted when she found out about Prohibition in Springfield ( Homer vs. The Eighteenth Amendment ); in addition, we see her at a meeting of the Alcoholics Anonymous Society in the Days of Wine and D'oh'ses series.

Comparison with Nick Riviera

In 1998, a playful comparison of Dr. Hibbert and Dr. Nick was published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal [10] . Although Hibbert’s competence was emphasized in this article, he was called an uneconomic doctor, while Dr. Nick was recognized as a model of the 21st century physician for indulging the wishes of patients at reasonable prices.

Reviews

Dr. Hibbert took 8th place out of the 10 best characters of Harry Shearer according to the Rolling Stone edition, losing to Montgomery Burns , but beating Kent Brockman . The reviewer called the character “good-natured” (“even too good-natured”) and noted his tendency to giggle, combined, however, with serious conclusions - this concerned, in particular, his remarks on “Homer Simpson syndrome” [11] and Bart on the sonogram Marge [12] . WhatCulture noted that Hibbert is “Springfield's most competent physician,” who takes his work very seriously. Critics also noted his penchant for laughing and joking at the wrong moment. [13]

Some authors point out that in “The Simpsons” in men, the gender role and identity are associated with professional activities to a greater extent than in women. Therefore, the profession is often (but not always) added to the names of male characters (Dr. Hibbert, Director Skinner , Rev. Lovejoy , etc.), while female characters are mainly referred to as “miss” or “Mrs.” without indicating a profession [14 ] .
