Biography

Born in the family of an employee. My father died in 1919 in the Civil War , and the thirteen-year-old Leonid became the head of the family. He had to engage in laborers in order to earn a living. In 1923 he graduated from the Second Level Unified Labor School, and in 1925 - the Ostrogozh Pedagogical College [1] .

He worked as a primary school teacher in the Voronezh region and the West Siberian region . In Western Siberia, he holds his first botanical gatherings, which later served as the basis for the work "Essay on the flora of birch spikes of the eastern part of the Baraba steppe ", published in 1935 [1] .

In 1931, L. M. Cherepnin entered the Moscow Pedagogical Institute at the Natural Chemistry Department. At the end of the institute in 1935 he was enrolled in graduate school at the Department of Botany. Under the guidance of an associate professor, future professor A. A. Uranov, Leonid Cherepnin successfully defended his dissertation in 1941 on “The vegetation of the rocky steppe of the Zhigulevsky Mountains ” [1] .

After graduating from graduate school in 1938, Leonid Cherepnin moved to Krasnoyarsk , where he became head of the Department of Botany at a local pedagogical institute. He actually laid the foundation for studying the flora of the southern part of the Krasnoyarsk Territory . Together with the department staff and students, Leonid Mikhailovich conducts floristic and geobotanical surveys in the steppe and forest-steppe regions of the region [1] .

Since 1946, Leonid Cherepnin has been working with the West Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences .

Cherepnin did not disregard the pedagogical work. He created a course of lectures, as a visual material for which he used both the local herbar material and exhibits brought from expeditions and foreign trips. He wrote works and to help local teachers and nature lovers: the methodical manual “Spring school excursions in botany in the forest-steppe zone of the Krasnoyarsk Territory” (1945) and the first determinant of plants blooming in April-May: “Early spring plants of the Krasnoyarsk Territory” (1948) [1] . Leonid Mikhailovich Cherepnin was awarded the title of Excellence in Public Education, and he was also awarded the medal "For Valiant Labor during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945" [2] .

Under the guidance of B.K. Shishkin, corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences, in the doctoral program of the V. L. Komarov Botanical Institute, he prepared and successfully defended his doctoral dissertation “Flora and Vegetation of the Southern Part of the Krasnoyarsk Territory” in 1953 [1] .

Even becoming a doctor of science, he continued to participate in numerous expeditions: in 1955 to the Koiskoye and Kuturchinsky White Mountains of the East Sayan, in 1957 along the Kazyr River [1] . He has been to Afghanistan , India , China , Czechoslovakia and Ceylon [3] .

Twice, in 1938-1941 and 1944-1954, Leonid Cherepnin headed the Department of Botany of the Krasnoyarsk State Pedagogical Institute (KSPU) [4] , and also served as deputy director of the pedagogical institute [3] .

Subsequently, Leonid Mikhailovich devoted himself to compiling "Flora of the southern part of the Krasnoyarsk Territory." His colleagues and students, M. I. Beglyanov and I. M. Krasnoborov , characterized him this way [3] :

“I had to be surprised at the capacity for work, energy, determination, with which he worked on Flora. It seemed that he did not know fatigue, did not lose a minute, always pondering something, reading, sunbathing, and unfolding a work plan for the future. ”

He died suddenly during a trip to Dixon on July 27, 1961 [3] .

Leonid Cherepnin himself managed to see 3 volumes from his 6-volume work, the 4th volume was submitted to the press shortly before his death, and two more volumes were written according to his notes by his son, V.L. Cherepnin and employees of the Department of Botany, after several expeditions in 1965-1966, carried out to clarify the place of growth of certain species and systematize the collected material. The publication was completed in 1967. The work is relevant to the present time, it continues to be used by students, school teachers, local historians and researchers [3] .

Colleagues and students of Leonid Mikhailovich logically completed his work, releasing in 1979 the "Guide to plants in the south of the Krasnoyarsk Territory" [3] .

Scientific Interests

As part of a scientific expedition, Cherepnin was engaged in the collection and study of plants of the Priabakan , Ulen and Uibat steppes, Western Sayan and Tuva [1] .

The result of work for which Cherepnin did not spare even his vacation was the creation of a herbarium of the Yenisei flora [1] . He processed more than 12 thousand plant specimens from the south of the Krasnoyarsk Territory, Khakassia and Tuva, which became the basis for the further development of the herbarium [5] . To date, more than 100 thousand herbarium sheets are represented in the herbarium; in 1977, he received international recognition and the KRAS international index [5] .

Leonid Mikhailovich for the first time fully described the flora (over 1,800 species of plants in the southern part of the Krasnoyarsk Territory and Khakassia) [2] .

The researches of the scientist in the Minusinsk depression were accepted by the Academy of Sciences of the USSR for publication as a monograph [2] .

Family

Memory

Three species and a subspecies of plants are named after the scientist - Cherepnin's cinquefoil ( Potentilla czerepninii Krasnob. ), Cherepnin's hawk ( Pilosella czerepninii Tupitz. ), Cherepnina wrestler ( Aconitum sajanense Kuminova subsp. Czerepninii scots ]

On September 17, 2002, a monument to the scientist was unveiled in the Botanical Microdistrict of Krasnoyarsk , one of the city streets was also named after him [2] .

At the conference dedicated to the centenary of the birth of L. M. Cherepnin, in 2006, 147 scientists from 60 institutions gathered in Krasnoyarsk, 40 reports were heard, 129 works were published [9] .
