As before, the wrestler who scored 6 penalty points dropped out of the tournament. The title was disputed by 13 wrestlers.
Three wrestlers reached the finals: Soviet athlete Valery Rezantsev , Pole Cheslav Kvetsinsky and Chorak. Rezantsev defeated both Kvetsinsky and Chorak, winning a gold medal. The meeting between Kvetsinsky and Chorak took place in the third round, and was brought in a draw.
