Biography
Born in London, in the family of orthodox Jews Jacob Farjon and Dina Levy. Having not received any secular education, at the age of fourteen, Benjamin began working in the editorial office of Christian magazine Nonconformist as a street seller. In 1854 he emigrated to Australia , and during the voyage he organized the release of several issues of the ship newspaper Ocean Record , for which he was encouraged - he was moved from a sailor's cabin to a passenger cabin [1] .
In Australia, Farjon worked as a miner at a gold mine in Victoria , where he organized the publication of the newspaper, and in 1861 he moved to New Zealand , where he settled on the South Island in Dunedin and worked as a journalist for the local newspaper Otago Daily Times . Soon, Farjon became deputy editor of Julius Vogel - later Prime Minister of New Zealand. In addition to journalistic materials, Farjon began writing novels and plays, which attracted the attention of Charles Dickens [1] .
