Life

Jacob was born in the middle of the fifth century AD er in the village of Kurtam on the Euphrates , in the ancient region of Serug, the eastern part of the province of Commagene kingdom (the modern region of Turkey is Seruch and Birecik ). He was educated at the famous school of Edessa and returned to Serug as a chorekhop in the village church in Haura ( ܚܘܪܐ , Ḥaurâ ). His episcopacy coincides with the severe persecution of Christians of Mesopotamia due to the war of the Sassanian Shah Kawad I with the Roman Empire. After the seizure of significant territories on January 10, 503, the Christians planned to leave their homes and move to the west of the Euphrates. Thanks to the letters of Jacob, they were strengthened in faith and fearlessness.

In 519, Jacob was ordained Bishop by Bishop Batnan da Sroug ( ܒܛܢܢ ܕܣܪܘܓ , Baṭnān da-Srûḡ) , the main city of the region. Since Jacob was born in the years of the controversial Council of Chalcedon , he lived during a church split in the Byzantine Empire , which led to the separation of the Syrian Orthodox Church from the branch of Eastern Christianity . Despite the tough anti-Chalcedon persecution towards the end of Jacob’s life, he remained remarkably calm about theological and political differences. However, during the pressure of Paul, the Bishop of Edessa , only he openly expressed his displeasure with Halkedon.

Works

His most famous work was the Homily . Eight hundred gomilias reached us. Only some of them have been translated into modern languages and published. In Russian, the most famous "Anthem of Our Lady".

Of the numerous prose works of Jacob, his letters are interesting, which shed light on the events of that time, demonstrate his commitment to the Miafizite doctrine , which fought for supremacy in the Syrian churches of the Bishopric of Edessa, resisting the teachings of Nestorius .
