Biography

Ivan Vasilievich Galenko was born on a farm in the Upper Kadamovka of the Shakhtinsko-Donetsk district of the North Caucasus region (now the Oktyabrsky district of the Rostov region ) in a peasant family. He graduated from the 7th grade of the school, worked on the collective farm.

During the war he was temporarily in the occupied territory. With the liberation of the Rostov Region, the Shakhty Military District Commissariat in March 1943 was drafted into the ranks of the Red Army . Since August 2, 1943 on the fronts of World War II .

He served as a gunner of an anti-tank gun, was wounded. When breaking through the enemy’s defense in the Turi district of the Volyn region near the village of Viduta on July 18, 1944, the guard sergeant Galenko destroyed a firing point of the enemy by a bunch of grenades, which prevented the unit from moving forward. By order of the 88th Guards Rifle Division of August 11, 1944, he was awarded the Order of Glory of the 3rd degree.

On the night of October 5, 1944, near the village of Gatzy in the Masovian Voivodeship , the commander of the foot reconnaissance guard guard sergeant Galenko led the left cover group during the capture of the control prisoner. He secretly made his way to the trench on the left and, when the enemy soldiers appeared, cut off the enemy with automatic fire and grenades and did not allow him to approach the search object, which ensured the success of the operation. By order of the 8th Guards Army of November 12, 1944, he was awarded the Order of Glory of the 2nd degree.

On April 25, 1945, the commander of the guard division, Sergeant Galenko, was one of the first to break into the suburbs of Berlin - Bukkov . An anti-tank grenade destroyed a car with ammunition, captured 13 enemy soldiers. By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of May 15, 1946, he was awarded the Order of Glory of the 1st degree.

In 1947, the foreman Galenko was discharged. He returned to his homeland, worked as a machine operator at the Sidorovo-Kadamov machine and tractor station . For labor merits he was awarded the Order of the Badge of Honor . On April 6, 1985, in commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the Victory, he was awarded the Order of the Patriotic War of the 1st degree .

Ivan Vasilyevich Galenko died on May 24, 1989 .
