The Venice Carnival ( French: Le carnaval de Venise ) is the opera ballet of the French Baroque composer Andre Campra , written on the libretto of the French playwright Jean Francois Renyard . The premiere took place on January 20, 1699 at the Palais Royal Theater in France by the Royal Academy of Music . Campra dedicated the opera to Louis the Great Dauphin , heir to the French throne. The opera ballet was to Louis's taste and he organized a re-production in February 1711, shortly before his death. French and Italian vocal style is skillfully mixed in opera music - a tendency already outlined in the Venetian act of “Gallant Europe”. Thanks to the rich musical texture, dynamic action and the “theater in theater” technique, the composer managed to convey the spirit of the Venetian carnival and establish the opera-ballet as an influential genre on the French stage [1] .
