Bacteria spores

Bacterial spores - round or oval-shaped bodies that form inside some bacteria at certain stages of their existence or when environmental conditions worsen [1] . Bacterial spores are resistant to various physical and chemical influences and persist for many years without losing their ability to grow into a vegetative form, which is important in the epidemiology of a number of diseases [2] . A known case is when it was possible to revive bacterial spores about 30 million years old [3] .

It should be noted that bacterial spores, unlike spores of plants and fungi , do not serve for reproduction [4] .

Description

Bacteria and other prokaryotes have the ability to spore formation, which consists in the fact that upon the onset of conditions unfavorable for life, the cell partially loses water, decreases in volume and changes shape, a dense membrane forms under the outer membrane [1] [4] . In the form of spores, the bacterium can withstand enormous mechanical, temperature and chemical stresses. For example, some spores can withstand three hours of boiling or the temperature of liquid nitrogen [4] [5] . Also in the form of spores, settlement is more efficient, because the partially dehydrated cell has a lower mass. However, spores are unstable to ultraviolet , like bacteria in general, and quickly die under such radiation. Therefore, ultraviolet is often used for absolute disinfection [6] .

Bacterial spores are stained using the Peshkov method or the Marcelli method .

Discovery History

The phenomenon was first described by microbiologists Ferdinand Cohn and Robert Koch . Cohn opened the debate at the hay stick , and Koch at the anthrax . Their scientific articles were published in one issue of the journal [2] .
