Historical Review

Church dedicated to st. Mauritius , the patron saint of the Magdeburg Archbishopric , was founded in the first half of the 12th century as a parish church in the southern part of old Halle, and since 1184 it has also been used as the collegiate church of the St. Augustine chapel of St. Mauritius

The construction of the current high-Gothic church began in 1388 under the supervision of Conrad von Einbeck ( German: Conrad von Einbeck , 1360-1428): a choir and an altar part of the church were erected from the east, marked by a surprisingly diverse and rich in details style. According to the plan, the western side of the church adjoining the city wall, generally erected in 1453-1510, should have been crowned with two towers, however, for financial reasons this idea was not realized (the height of the western facade is actually equal to the height of the church walls).

In 1519, the Augustinian chapter was dissolved, and the church of St. Mauritius was transferred to the Order of the Dominicans , before being forced to relinquish its old church to Albrecht of Brandenburg for the arrangement of the cathedral .

With the introduction of Protestant dogma in Galle, the Dominican monastery was closed, and in 1542 the church, which turned out to be in city ownership, was transferred to the evangelical community.

At the end of the XVII century, from 1694 to 1697, a baroque bell tower was built over the western facade of the church, dismantled in 1789 after its partial collapse. Instead, in 1801-1803, the existing superstructure was built to this day.

In the period from 1806 to 1808, the old convent buildings and the monastery cloister adjoining the church were demolished. Ultimately, from the medieval development of the site, in addition to the church, only the building of the St. John.

Since 1970, the church building has been leased by the Catholic community of the city, and is used as a parish church dedicated to St. Mauritius and Paul.
