The show was extended for the second season, which premiered in France on Canal + on March 18, 2013 [4] , and on Netflix on May 1, 2013. The third and final season was released in France on Canal + on September 15, 2014 [4] , and on Netflix two weeks later, on November 1, 2014 [5] . The final episode of the television series was shown in France on Canal + on October 27, 2014.
Production
The series was developed by Atlantique Productions (a subsidiary of Lagardere ) for the French paid premium channel Canal + , in conjunction with EOS Entertainment. The shooting took place in the Czech Republic [6] (all three seasons), Italy (second and third seasons) [7] , Croatia (third season) [8] . In the Czech Republic, the show was produced by Etic films [3] . The international screening was carried out by Beta Film GmbH.
International production
Although the series is considered French-German-Czech-Italian, all production is international. The creator of the series, producer and lead screenwriter Tom Fontana , as well as other screenwriters, including Sean Whitesell (" House Doctor ," Detective Rush , "The Slaughter Department ") [9] , Gina Gionfriddo (" Law and Order ", " Law & Order: Criminal Intent ”) [10] and Larry Cohen (“ Patients ”,“ Philanthropist ”), as well as some others are Americans. In the second season, French screenwriter Audrey Foucher joined the scriptwriting team [11] .
The directors come from several different parts of Europe: Oliver Hirschbigel (“ Diana: A Love Story ”, “ The Invasion ” with starring Daniel Craig ) [12] and Christoph Schreve [13] [14] are Germans, Dirbla Walsh is the Irish, the most famous on British television series (The Tudors , Shameless , BBC Little Dorrit ) [15] [16] , Briton Metin Hussein ( Lewis , Shameless, Merlin ) [17] [18] and Frenchman Thomas Vincent [19] . The series has a rather unique format due to the fact that each director shoots at least two consecutive episodes before transferring the director's chair to another.
The protagonist, Rodrigo Borgia , is played by American actor John Doman (" wiretap ") [20] . The remaining actors come from the UK, France, Germany and the Czech Republic, as well as Ireland, Denmark, Spain and several other countries.

1492 year. Italy is divided into many warring states that are threatened by invasions from the outside: the French - from the north and the Turks - from the south. In Rome itself, there is a power struggle between the influential families of Colonna, Orsini and Borgia. Pope Innocent VIII is in poor health and may die in the near future. The Vice-Chancellor of the Roman Church Rodrigo Borgia, using the location of the pope, is seeking for the King of Spain the title "Most Catholic Majesty" in honor of the completion of the Reconquista. The main opponent of Borgia - the dean of the Holy College of Cardinals Giuliano della Rovere - unsuccessfully tries to achieve a similar title for the king of France. Rodrigo’s son, Juan Borgia, is returning from Spain, reporting the death of Pedro Luis Borgia, the eldest son of Rodrigo. Lucretia becomes a girl and moves to live with Rodrigo, who plans to marry her to the benefit of the Borgia family. Rodrigo Borgia has been trying to reconcile the long-standing warring Orsini and Colonna and create an alliance with them to protect the regime from upcoming invasions. However, due to the actions of Juan and Cesare, this attempt against Colonna fails - this family becomes the enemies of Borgia. Cesare Borgia receives the title of Archbishop of Valencia. | ||||||

Historical accuracy
All characters in the series [21] existed in reality and appear under their true names. Most of the events shown in the series really happened, or at least are known to historians from gossip and conjectures of contemporaries; however, like many other works of art, the series sometimes freely addresses facts for the sake of greater coherence and dramatic narrative: complex political events are simplified, the number of participants is reduced, time intervals are compressed, the actions of some historical persons are attributed to others, the circumstances of the personal lives of the heroes are conceived [ 22] . So, the first season allegedly describes the events of 1492 - 1493 , but it also includes the events of 1494 - 1497 (such as the first French invasion and the assassination of Giovanni / Juan Borgia ); the second season compresses the events that took place over several years into the interval of several months of 1494 , and the Cesare Borgia series is portrayed as a participant in events in which the historical Cesare Borgia was not present at all, for example, the execution of Savonarola and the death of Charles VIII [23] , which occurred in 1498 year. The conquests of Borgia 1499-1503 , on the contrary, are stretched in the third season for 1495-1503 [24] .
