The American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences ( Oscars ) award category for Best Foreign Language Film is intended to award feature films produced outside the US jurisdiction and with predominantly non-English or dialogue languages [1] . As a competitive “merit award”, she first appeared at the 29th Oscar award ceremony, held in 1957 [2] . Earlier, in 1948-1956, foreign-language films were awarded 8 times with the “Honorary / Special Oscar”. The award is presented to the director, and the official winner is the country whose film won.
Egypt began to submit films for consideration by the American Academy in this category, the first among the Arab states and among the countries of the African continent, starting in 1958, when the film “ Cairo Station ” by Yousef Shahin was sent there. Since then, to date, Egypt (acting until 1971 as the United Arab Republic , later as the Arab Republic of Egypt ) has filed 30 applications for the nomination. All announced films were filmed in the Egyptian Arabic language as the main language of dialogue.
The record holder for the number of his films selected for the Oscar nomination is director Yussef Shahin , who secured Egypt's applications in 1958, 1979, 1990 and 1997. In addition to his four-time participation, several more directors are twice represented on the list - Kamal el-Sheikh (applications from 1962 and 1976), Hussein Kamal (in 1965 and 1973), Said Marzuk (in 1972 and 1975), Daud Abdel Sayed (in 1994 and 2010) and Mohammed Khan (in 2007 and 2014).
To date, none of the films claimed by Egypt have achieved a shortlist or victory in the nomination for best foreign language film. The first Egyptian film to win a “nomination” in any Oscar category in general was the 2013 documentary directed by [3] [4] .
