Altyntobe (site of ancient settlement, Kazygurt district)

Altyntobe ( Kaz.Altyntөbe ) is a medieval fortification of the 10th – 16th centuries in the Kazygurt district of the Turkestan region of Kazakhstan . It is located on the northern outskirts of the village of Karzhan , on the left bank of the river Carisans . Discovered and investigated by an archaeological expedition under the leadership of A. N. Podushkin in 1982. In 1992 investigated by the archaeological detachment of the Turkestan expedition. The central hillock is square and surrounded by a moat. The height is 13–15 m, the base is 100 × 120 m, the upper part is 40 × 50 m. The platform (140 × 80 m) adjoins the southeast, surrounded by a defensive shaft from three sides. The eastern part of Altyntobe abruptly ends with the river Karzhansu. Traces of buildings in the form of earthen hills. During the excavations, jugs, ceramic vessels, bowls with ornaments were found. The mound was located on the Silk Road .
