The plot of the television series takes place in the second half of the 9th century , when what is now known as England represented several separate Anglo-Saxon kingdoms - Northumbria , Mercia , Wessex , East Anglia and others. Anglo-Saxon lands are attacked by the “great army of pagans” - the Vikings , and power is seized by them given . Partial independence is retained only by the kingdom of Wessex , ruled by the intelligent and talented King Alfred the Great .
The main character, Utred Bebbanburg, is an orphaned son of an Anglo-Saxon ten , abducted by the Scandinavians and raised as the adopted son of Jarl Ragnar. As a result of the war that began between the Vikings and Saxons , as well as dynastic intrigues, Utred's allegiance is subjected to serious tests, forcing him to choose between the Danes who raised him and the British who rose against them [9] .
Season One
At the beginning of the first season, Jarl Ragnar is brutally and treacherously killed by his fellow tribesman Kjartan. Utred Bebbanburg, raised by Jarl Ragnar as his own son in the tradition of the Danes , dreams of revenge. He begins wandering around England, looking for ways to get close to Kjartan, and soon joins the newly crowned King of Wessex Alfred . Alfred, seeing in Utred a great warrior, asks him to engage in tactical preparation of the troops for the battle with the Danes.
Succumbing to Alfred’s persuasion to marry a noble lady, Utred marries Lady Mildrit, but soon finds out that with the marriage he transferred a huge debt of the Mildrit family to the church. Utred understands that the king slyly kept silent about duty, wanting to set him up. Mildrite herself turns out to be a sweet woman, and gives birth to a son from Utred.
To pay off his debt, Utred goes to Cornwall to engage in robbery. There he meets King Peradura and accepts his offer for money to fight the Danes terrorizing the kingdom, but soon Utred betrays King Peradura, kidnaps his treasures and takes Queen Isolde with him, possessing witchcraft abilities.
Soon the Danes attack Wessex and take over the capital. Alfred, Utred and part of the yard run and take refuge in the swamps . From there they convene an army and prepare for a decisive battle. The army should lead Utred. Meanwhile, Utred’s little son is dying, their marriage to Mildrit is falling apart.
The events of the first season culminate in the historical battles of the Saxons Alfred with the Ubba army at Kinwit and the army of Gutrum at Edington, which took place in the spring of 878 . In the series, King Alfred’s army leads Utred Bebbanburg into battle. He wins, but Isolda and Utred's closest friend, Leofrick, die. Uthred accepts the gratitude of King Alfred, and the king dismisses him so that Uthred can once again search for the murderer of his adoptive father.
Season Two
Utred fulfills yet another errand of Alfred, rescuing King of Northumbria Guthred from slavery at Kjartan. Alfred hopes that the northern lands will unite under the rule of Guthred and will resist the Danes, which will ultimately contribute to the creation of a united England. Utred and Gisela, Guthred's sister, fall in love. Utred swears allegiance to King Guthred, but he, on the advice of Abbot Eadred, betrays Utred and sells, along with two associates, into slavery. For almost a year, Utred worked as a rower on a Danish ship in slavery until his half-brother, Ragnar, freed him on the orders of Alfred. Returning, Utred discovers that Abbot Eadred is trying against his will to give Gisela to marry the enemy of Utred. Enraged, Utred kills the abbot. In redemption of his deed, he is again forced to swear allegiance to King Alfred.
Soon Utred and Ragnar get a chance to take revenge on Kjartan. They attack it, according to rumors, an impregnable fortress, finding in it a secret poorly guarded passage. In the fray, Ragnar kills Kjartan, retribution takes place, Ragnar and Utred also release their sister, who was considered dead, from the captivity of Kjartan.
Years go by. Utred faithfully serves King Alfred, although Alfred himself is gradually losing confidence in Utred, considering him an incorrigible "godly pagan."
One day, the long-standing enemies of Utred and Alfred make themselves felt - the Dan brothers Siegfried and Eric. They are preparing a trap. First they invade and capture London , and when the Saxons try to free him, they capture the daughter of King Alfred Ethelfleda. The determination of King Alfred to redeem a daughter at any cost, even unbearable for the kingdom, raises doubts from Lord Odda, friend and long-term adviser to Alfred. Odda decides to cheat on the king and, in order to save the kingdom, gathering his own army, attack the Benfleot fortress, which contains Ethelfleda. Meanwhile, one of the brothers, Eric, falls madly in love with ельthelfleda, and decides to abduct her by betraying his brother. Utred decides to help Eric, but on the night when their escape is appointed, everything does not go according to plan: Eric dies, Ethelfleda escapes, and Siegfried goes into battle with the army of Lord Odd. Siegfried’s squad is defeated, Siegfried dies, but Alfred does not forgive betrayal to his friend. Lord Odd is imprisoned, where he commits suicide. Utred remains in the service of King Alfred, but his trust in Alfred is undermined, and he begins to think about his own interests ...
