Biography
Born on August 7, 1858 in the village of Kladovka in the Yaroslavl district of the Yaroslavl province, in a noble family. Cousin of the poet K. N. Batyushkov [5] . He studied at the Yaroslavl gymnasium. In 1877 he entered the Medical and Surgical Academy in St. Petersburg . He took part in the student movement. He was one of the organizers of the student demonstration at the Academy in December 1878 [6] .
At the end of 1879 he was arrested for participating in a student party that took place at his apartment, and was administratively exiled to the Arkhangelsk province [7] . At the beginning of 1881 he returned to Petersburg and entered the university. He distributed revolutionary literature, participated in the activities of the Red Cross " People’s Will ." Personally knew A.I. Zhelyabov and S.L. Perovskaya , worked under their direct supervision. On the night of April 2 to 3, 1881 he was arrested and administratively exiled to Siberia for 5 years [8] .
On December 23, 1882, he fled from exile [9] and at the beginning of 1883 he arrived in St. Petersburg . He restored relations with local organizations, on behalf of the St. Petersburg organization " People’s Will " visited Orsha , Mogilev and Minsk . In April 1883 he returned to St. Petersburg, worked in a secret revolutionary printing house, which was intended for the publication of the “Leaf of the People’s Will”. However, it was eliminated due to the threat of disclosure. It was published only the brochure "What can we expect from the coronation" on the coronation of Alexander III . Both "Leaflets of the People’s Will" were published in the printing house of M. P. Shebalin . Together with S. N. Krivenko and S. A. Priklonsky, he planned to publish an illegal newspaper that would bring together revolutionaries and liberals. In order to raise funds for the publication of the newspaper, he went south, visited Kharkov and Yekaterinoslav [10] [6] In January 1884 he came to Kiev , met with MP Shebalin, helped him restore the local organization of Narodnaya Volya [11] .
At the Paris Congress of "Narodnaya Volya" in late January - early February 1884, he was elected to the Central Group, participated in negotiations with the " Young Party of Narodnaya Volya ". He organized the production of bombs in Lugansk and the printing house in Rostov-on-Don . It printed part of circulation No. 10 of Narodnaya Volya [6] [ 6] [12] [13] [14] . At the end of 1884 he went abroad, but at the beginning of 1885 he returned to Russia [15] , joined the South Russian People’s Food Organization and, together with B. D. Orzhikh, traveled to Kursk , Oryol , Moscow , St. Petersburg , distributed No. 11-12 “Narodnaya” will ”, restored relations with local food organizations [16] .
January 18, 1886 was arrested. May 26 - June 4, 1887 sued according to the " twenty-one trial ", sentenced to death. Upon approval of the sentence, the execution was replaced by life imprisonment. He served his penal servitude in Shlisselburg [17] [18] [19] [20] . He was released in the fall of 1905. After his release, he lived in the Livonia province, then in Kiev , wrote memoirs. Work on them began in Shlisselburg [21] [22] . He joined the Socialist Revolutionary Party , carried out the instructions of the Central Committee. He was a member of the party forensic commission in the case of EF Azef [6] .
In 1910 he went to Geneva for treatment. He lived in Switzerland and France (from 1910 - in Paris), where he was a member of the group of M. A. Natanson. Since 1912, he withdrew from active political activity, was engaged in charity and public work. During World War I, a volunteer on the French front. September 18, 1917 (at the base) became the honorary chairman of the Russian League of Revolutionary Defense. After the February Revolution of 1917, he made sure that the Turgenev Library in Paris was not transferred to the School of Oriental Languages. From 1920 until his death, chairman of the board of the Turgenev library. In 1919, a member of the committee of the Russian Press Bureau "Union" in Paris. One of the first members, created in 1919, in 1921-1923, secretary of the Committee for Assistance to Russian Writers and Scientists in France. Treasurer, then member of the board of the Public Committee for the Relief of the Starving in Russia, since 1924 member of the new committee. Member of the Russian Political Conference at a peace conference. Member of the Paris organization of the Party of Socialists-Revolutionaries, Zemgor, Committee of the Political Red Cross. Chairman of the Committee of the Russian Public Dining Room on Ryu Glacier.
