Biography
Born on the island of Bromö on Lake Venern in Sweden. He graduated from the course at the Agricultural Academy in Tammela. Later, he was engaged in farming on his father's farm in Ruissalo . In 1886 he entered the Academy of Music in Helsingfors . He studied under F. Busoni .
Since 1889 he lived in Charlottenburg , a suburb of Greater Berlin , where he took up literary work.
He published a number of short stories and novels, but is better known as a playwright. The greatest success was enjoyed by his great historical play “Christians II” (1897), which was performed many times in Helsingfors , Stockholm and Lubeck . His works are partly translated by him, partly written in German.
He was friends with the writer Augustus Strindberg , whose biographer he was, composer Jan Sibelius , artists Edward Munch and Axeli Gallen-Kallela .
Interesting fact.
A. Paul in 1893 served as a model for the image of a man in Edward Munch 's painting “The Vampire ”.
