Description of the ship

Wheel steamer with a wooden hull, the length of the vessel was 28.96 meters [comm. 1] and a width of 6.2 meters [comm. 2] . A steam engine with a capacity of 40 rated horsepower and two onboard propeller wheels was installed on the ship, and the ship also carried sailing weapons [1] [2] [3] [4] .

The orientalist I.N. Berezin in his “Journey to Dagestan and the Transcaucasus” in 1842 described the ship as it sailed from Astrakhan [5] [6] :

Astrabad threw a huge column of smoke, the wheels were furrowed along the smooth surface of the Volga, the frightened boats rushed in countless radii in different directions ...

Service History

The steamboat Astrabad was laid in Astrakhan on April 24 ( May 6 ), 1835 , and after launching on September 12 ( 24 ), 1835 , it became part of the Caspian Flotilla of Russia. The construction was carried out by the foreman ensign Bebikhov [2] [7] .

In the campaign of 1837, under the command of Lieutenant Commander F. A. Usachenko, the ship went on a cruising voyage in the northern part of the Caspian Sea. The purpose of the voyage was the fight against piracy and the protection of fisheries [8] .

In 1848, the ship’s hull was transferred to the port service, and the steam engine was installed on a new ship of the same name [2] [7] .
