Evagrius belonged to the Eustathian group of Antioch Christians. In 330, the Council of Antioch was held, it was condemned, and then Eustathius of Antioch was exiled. Omousian Christians (those who held onto the term “consubstantial” and the Nicene Creed ) did not accept the new bishop and were left without a bishop . Their Christian community was subsequently called the Eustathian Group, and, without a bishop, was governed by elders . Since 331, the bishops of Antioch were either Omiusians or Omis or Macedonians . For this reason, the Eustathian group of Christians considered them heretics and did not have Eucharistic and prayerful communion with them. Athanasius the Great in Alexandria in 362 collects a church cathedral, on which confirms the Nicene Creed. During the cathedral, Lucifer of Kalaria is sent to Antioch and ordains solely for the Eustathian group of Peacock as bishop. Bishop of Rome Liberius , subsequent popes and the Church of Rome, as well as the Patriarchs of Alexandria, starting with Athanasius, recognized the Orthodox and legal bishop of Antioch Pavlin . The Omis, who rejected the Nicene Creed at the in 359 , were chosen in 360 by the bishop of Antioch Meletius . Peacock, right before his death in 388, single-handedly ordained Evagrius to the bishop of Antioch. Despite the sole ordination, the Roman and Alexandrian churches recognized and communed with Evagrius. At this time, the Eastern bishops recognized Flavian , successor of Meletius, as Antiochian bishop. Between Evagrius and Flavian as between the Eustathian group and the Meletian group there was a contention or split, which continued after the death of Evagrius, in 392 . Jerome of Stridon , who visited Antioch and had Eucharistic communion with Evagrius, in his book “On Famous Men” devotes 125th chapter to Evagrius. In it he writes:

"Evagrius, Bishop of Antioch, a man of outstanding sharpness of mind, while still a presbyter, read me treatises on various topics that he had not yet published. Translated "The Life of Anthony " from the Greek language Athanasius into our language."

The original works of Evagrius himself have not been preserved.
