Biography
Born in 1787 in a family of civil servants in Seoul. Orphaned at an early age. From the age of 13, he studied the basics of the Christian faith. In 1801, during the persecution, his elder brother, John Choi, was martyred for his faith, and his family lost all their property. Married to Magdalen Sleep . In their marriage, 11 children were born, of whom 9 died in early childhood. In 1815 he returned to the study of Christianity. He was baptized in 1821. He was arrested on December 29, 1839 in Seoul and beheaded on the same day near the Small Western Gate along with Barbara Cho , Magdalena Khan , Benedict Hyun , Varvara Ko , Magdalena Lee and Elizabeth Chon . His wife, Magdalena Son, was martyred on January 31, 1840 and her daughter Barbara Choi on February 1, 1840.
He was beatified on July 5, 1925 by Pope Pius XI and canonized on May 6, 1984 by Pope John Paul II, together with a group of 103 Korean martyrs .
