One of the strongest specialists in the USSR in the correspondence game of chess. Member of several USSR championships in correspondence: 4th (1957-1960, 8-10 places), 6th (1963/1964, 4th place), 7th (1965/1966, 14-16th place) and 14th (1979/1980, 8th place). Member of the 5th World Championships in Correspondence (1965-1968, final - 9-11 places).
By main profession - historian, teacher. He worked as a history teacher in preparatory courses at Moscow State University . From the beginning of the 1970s to the last years of his life, he was the head and coach of the chess club of the Bauman Palace of Pioneers and Schoolchildren in Stopani Lane (where, back in the 1930s, Capablanca and Lasker were given simultaneous games during visits to Moscow). Among the pupils of the chess club during the years of Altshuler's leadership are Grandmaster Maria Manakova , a number of international masters and masters of sports of the USSR.
Passionate theater-goer and bibliophile, assembled one of the largest chess libraries in Moscow.
He was twice married. The only son emigrated to Israel.
He died on August 14, 2003 in Moscow. He was buried at Perepechinsky cemetery .
