Biography

In 1193 she married the Norman prince Roger , who bore the title of Duke of Puglia , but at the end of that year became a widow [2] .

On April 2/3, 1195, she became engaged to Philip , the Duke of Swabia . On May 25, 1197, she married him and the next year, thanks to an unexpected turn in the fate of her second husband, she became the German Empress.

Irina, or, as she was called in Germany , Maria, "a rose without thorns, a gentle little dove," as Walter von der Vogelweide sang, gained many admirers in Germany.

She died on August 27, 1208 from premature birth, having survived for two months her second husband, who was killed on June 21 of that year [3] .
