The tank of limit parameters is the concept of the development of modern tank technology, proposed by the Soviet design engineer Nikolai Shashmurin as opposed to the concept of the main battle tank [1] . The idea of the tank limit parameters was based on two main points:

  • firstly, the existence and development of two types of tanks is necessary, the first of which should be the main battle tank (mass and relatively inexpensive), the second - the tank of maximum parameters (small-scale, with a qualitatively different level of combat capabilities),
  • secondly, the tank of limit parameters serves as a platform for testing the latest achievements and developments, which, after a comprehensive assessment, can be transferred to the main battle tank [1] .

In the case of using a modular layout, the tank of limit parameters can be used as the basis for creating a family of armored combat vehicles for various purposes, for example: a heavy infantry fighting vehicle , command and reconnaissance vehicle, engineering demolition vehicle, etc. [2]

The emergence of this term is associated with the so-called technology for designing armored vehicles “by limiting parameters” [3] , which has been used [3] since 1945 when creating the IS-7 heavy tank . In accordance with this concept, all combat characteristics (firepower, security, mobility, etc.) of a new vehicle should be laid at the maximum possible (maximum) level due to the fact that on average, a combat vehicle in the extreme conditions of a modern battlefield does not operate more one or two days and during this period its combat potential should be realized to the maximum extent [4] .

According to the Russian military expert M. Baryatinsky, the Soviet T-64 , the development of which included solving a whole range of non-trivial tasks, can be attributed to the tank 's completed projects. However, the created machine turned out to be so expensive and complicated that a natural step was its simplification and processing into a mass mobilization version: the main battle tank T-72 [5] .
