Started at the end of 1854, the painting was completed within six weeks. The artist spoke of his work: "The whole world is depicted in my workshop." The characters in the picture are allegories of various influences on the creative life of Courbet. Representatives of different layers of society are shown on the left; in the center - Courbet himself works on the landscape, turning his back on the naked model, symbolizing the traditions of academic art ; on the right are Courbet's friends and colleagues, among whom you can find Georges Sand , Charles Baudelaire , Chanfleury , Pierre Joseph Proudhon , collector Alfred Bruy and singer Caroline Unger , wife of Francois Sabatier. It is believed that the ghostly female figure to the right of Baudelaire is his mistress, Jeanne Duval , whom Baudelaire asked to be painted over.
The jury of the 1855 World's Fair accepted 11 works by Courbet, but refused the Artist's Studio. In response, Courbet, with the help of Alfred Bruyah, opened his own exhibition next to the official exposition, which marked the beginning of the Salons of the Outcast . Contemporaries did not appreciate the exhibition, and Eugene Delacroix was one of the few who supported Courbet.
The work, created under the influence of Menin by Diego Velazquez , in turn influenced Edouard Manet in his early paintings The Old Musician and Music in the Tuileries .
