Lesser Guinean Mobula

Lesser Guinean Mobula [1] ( lat. Mobula rochebrunei ) - a species of cartilaginous fish of the genus mobula of the family of bracken rays of the order of the caudate - shaped superorder of rays . These stingrays inhabit the tropical waters of the eastern Atlantic Ocean . They are found at the bottom and on the surface of the water. The maximum recorded width of the disk is 133 cm. The pectoral fins of these slopes fuse with the head, forming a diamond-shaped disk whose width exceeds the length. The snout is massive, flat, the front edge is almost straight with a notch in the middle. Part of the pectoral fins is transformed into the so-called head fins. At the base of the tail is the dorsal fin [2] .

Like other caudate-like, small Guinean mobules reproduce by egg-production . Embryos develop in the womb, feeding on the yolk and histotroph . There is 1 newborn in the litter. The diet consists mainly of plankton. These slopes are the subject of commercial fishing [3] [4] .

Taxonomy

For the first time, a new species was scientifically described in 1879 as Cephaloptera rochebrunei [5] . It was named after the French naturalist [6] . The morphological similarity of mobiles often leads to errors in species identification [4] .

Range

Small Guinean Mobules live in the tropical waters of the eastern Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Angola , Guinea , Mauritania and Senegal . They are found both at the bottom and at the surface of the water [4] . According to some reports, they are found in the waters of Brazil [7] .

Description

The pectoral fins of Mobula munkiana , the base of which is located behind the eyes, fuse with the head, forming a diamond-shaped flat disc, the width of which exceeds the length, the edges of the fins are in the form of pointed (“wings”). The head is wide and flat, with eyes wide apart. Behind the eyes are sprays . The front part of the pectoral fins is transformed into the so-called head fins. At the base of the tail is a small dorsal fin. The tail is long, whip-shaped. The dorsal surface of the disc is dark; the ventral side is white. On the ventral surface of the disk there are 5 pairs of gill slits , mouth and nostrils [8] [2] . The maximum recorded disk width is 133 cm [3] .

Biology

Small Guinean Mobules are found in groups. They are able to rapidly accelerate and make jumps above the surface of the water. The diet consists of plankton and small fish [9] .

Like other caudate-shaped, these rays belong to ovoviviparous fish. Embryos develop in the womb, feeding on the yolk and histotroph. There is one newborn in the litter with a disc about 34–35 cm wide [4] .

On small Guinean mobiles, the monogenes Mobulicola dubium [10] and the copepods Entepherus laminipes [11] parasitize.

Human Interaction

Small Guinean mobiles are of interest for commercial fishing. They are caught using surface gillnets, tiers and seines. The meat is eaten. Cartilage and gill stamens of mobiles are valued in Chinese medicine . The International Union for Conservation of Nature has assigned this species a “Vulnerable” conservation status [4] .
