The place and year of birth is unknown. Philip was the bishop of the city of Gortyna, which is located on the island of Crete , during the reign of the emperors Mark Antonin Vera , Lucius and Aurelius Commodus . Philip wrote, according to Jerome, the remarkable work “Against Marcion ”. The work of Philip was not preserved.
Eusebius of Caesarea in his book “Church History” reports that Dionysius of Corinth wrote a letter to the Church in Gortyna and to the Cretan churches in which Dionysius praises Bishop Philip, since the Cretan Church has repeatedly witnessed its allegiance to the Orthodox faith; in the letter, Dionysius recalls that one should beware of heretical infection.
