Studied at Cornell University . He received a bachelor's and master's degree in civil engineering. Upon graduation, candidates for officers, he was awarded the title of second lieutenant of the U.S. Marine Corps in 1974.
After graduating from elementary school, Paxton enrolled in an airborne school in Fort Benning, Georgia, and then was appointed commander of a small platoon company Bravo, 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Brigade, Kaneohe, Hawaii.
He participated in operations in Bosnia and Somalia.
From 2003 to 2006, Paxton was the commander of the Marine Corps Recruits Training Camp in San Diego and recruiting West Region personnel.
On May 22, 2007, Paxton transferred command of the 1st Marine Division to Brigadier General Richard P. Mills, and took on the role of chief of staff of the multinational force in Iraq [1] .
