William C. Campbell ( born William C. Campbell ; born June 28, 1930 , Ramelton , Irish Free State ) - American biochemist of Irish origin, Ph.D. (1957, University of Wisconsin Madison ), professor at Drew University . In 2015, he shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine, along with Satoshi Omura and Tu Yu . They were able to discover a new class of drugs based on avermectins , the waste products of the fungi Streptomyces avermitilis , which made it possible to more effectively treat invasions caused by parasitic worms (in particular, onchocerciasis and elephantiasis ). [2] .

In 1952 he graduated from Trinity College and moved to further study in the United States. In 1957 he defended his Ph.D. thesis at the University of Wisconsin-Madison .
