Historian of the reign of Nicholas II
The Supreme Monarchical Council instructed S. S. Oldenburg to write the history of the reign of Emperor Nicholas II , which was published in 1939 (Volume 1) and 1949 (Volume 2).
The work he wrote is apologetic. The author substantiates that the revolution interrupted the successful progressive economic development of Russia: “in the twentieth year of the reign of Emperor Nicholas II, Russia reached an unprecedented level of material prosperity in it”.
S. S. Oldenburg was able to carry out such a scientific study, having access to unique documents - copies of genuine historical acts of the Russian Empire at the Russian Embassy in Paris [4] on Grenelle Street, which, as a precaution, long before the First World War , began to be sent to storage at the Russian embassy in Paris. Prior to being recognized by the French government of the USSR, the Russian Embassy was managed by V.A.
The manuscript, even during the lifetime of the author, was delivered at the beginning of 1940 to Belgrade, however, the preparation of the manuscript for publication began only after the death of Sergey Sergeyevich. In 1941, in connection with the outbreak of hostilities of Germany against Yugoslavia , only a few copies remained of the first circulation of the book [3] .
According to the first publisher of this capital work, Yu. K. Meyer, these circumstances enabled Professor S. S. Oldenburg to create an objective investigation of the corresponding historical period of the Russian State. The archival documents that he used in his work on “The Reign of Emperor Nicholas II” did not fall into the hands of the Bolsheviks , as they were promptly sent to Stanford University, USA in Palo Alto, California [4] .
In modern Russia, S. S. Oldenburg's book has withstood a number of reprints.
