History
Interlaken was originally the name of a Catholic monastery in the canton of Bern, between the Lake of Thun and Brienz; hence Inter lacus (between the lakes), then Interlachen (ancient documents give the name Interlappen, which is explained by Inter lapides). The monastery was founded in 1130 and received great privileges from the emperor Conrad III . In the XIV century, he conducted independent negotiations with Bern, but in the XV century, he gradually began to fall under his power.
After the Reformation, the Interlaken Monastery was referred to a mental hospital.
Near Interlaken, on Mount Abendberg , the Swiss psychiatrist Guggenbühl created the first specialized clinic for cretinism patients.
