Surimono

Surimono Katsushika Hokusai

Surimono ( Jap. 摺 物 ) is a kind of traditional Japanese woodcuts , engraving intended as a gift for a holiday or dedicated to a specific event in life.

It is usually a sheet of small size (to a square format with a side of 20 cm). Often used expensive materials, complex techniques of execution, innovative techniques and free composition. Almost always the poetic text serves as an integral part of the surimono engraving.

Surimono became widespread in the Edo period among the urban intelligentsia.
