Bertus Martinius (Ben) Stom ( Dutch. Bertus Martinus "Ben" Stom ; October 13, 1886 , Apeldoorn - August 18, 1965 ), also known as Jos Stom ( Dutch. Jos Stom ) [1] - a Dutch footballer who played as a defender , played for the Velositas and HFC teams. He played nine matches in the national team - twice was a captain. He is the author of the first scored own goal in the history of the Netherlands national team [2] .

The early years

Bertus Martinius Stom was born on October 13, 1886 in Apeldoorn, in the family of Christian Willem Henry Stoma. His father graduated from military service as an infantry captain, and after the service he worked for a long time as a secretary in the municipal health of Apeldoorn [3] . In May 1888, his sister Maria Alvina was born in Malanga.

Ben attended a cadet school in Alkmaar , and then enrolled in the Royal Military Academy in the city of Breda .

Career

Ben Stom began his football career in his native Apeldoorn - he played for the teams “Robur et Velositas” and “Unitas”. At the age of 19, Ben became a member of the Velositas club, which was mainly played by students from the military academy and cadet schools [4] .

Stom played as a defender and soon received a call to the Netherlands national team . His debut took place on April 30, 1905 in a friendly match against the Belgian national team , held in Antwerp . In that meeting, he scored an own goal in the 86th minute, despite this, the guests won with a score of 4: 1 - for the Netherlands this was the first official match in the history of the team [5] . In total, over four years, Ben took part in nine matches of the national team - in the last two games he was the captain of the team [6] .

In April 1908, as the second lieutenant, Stom went to serve in the Dutch East Indies [7] [8] .

Personal life

Ben married at the age of 38 - Ferdinade Victorina Paulina Ball, who was twenty years younger than him, became his chosen one. She was the stepsister of footballer Beb Buckhuis . Their marriage was registered July 7, 1925 in Batavia on the island of Java [9] . In July 1926, a daughter was born in their family. At the end of November 1940, in The Hague , their daughter Maraioske was born.
