Biography
His full name contains the nisba “al-Lamishi” (indicates origin from the village of Lamish, which was located in the Ilamish area between Andijan and Talas , according to V.V. Barthold [2] ) and “al-Balasaguni”, indicating the origin of City Balasagun . Whether he was born in Lamish and then moved to Balasagun is unknown.
According to the Arab historian and traveler Yakut al-Hamawi (XII century), al-Balasaguni was educated in Baghdad [3] . He studied the Hanafi fiqh under Muhammad ibn Ali ad-Damgani, Abul-Fadl ibn Khayrun and Abu Abdullah al-Hanifi, the founder of the school of the Hanafis [1] . He was fluent in Arabic, knew the literature, history and philosophy of the Arab East. He specialized in writing interpretations of the Qur'an ( tafsir ), and selecting Hadith (stories) about the Prophet Muhammad [1] .
For some time he was the Qadi (Sharia judge) of Jerusalem , then was removed from this position and became the Qadi of Damascus . He was an ardent supporter of the Hanafi madhhab and became famous for his enmity with the Shafi'is and Malikites . Al-Balasaguni was the first to remove the Shafiites from the Imamism in the Damascus mosque and put the Imam-Hanafi to it [4] . It is reported that he wanted to introduce jizyu (poll tax for non-believers) for followers of the Shafi'i madhhab [5] .
Al-Balasaguni died on Friday, the 13th of the month of Jumad al-Sani 506 AH ( 1113 ). Ibn Asakir reports that he witnessed a funeral prayer over him [5] .
