Sports career

He has performed in several athletics disciplines. In 1954 he became the "Athlete of the Year" Conference of the Atlantic Coast. In 1955, he won the NCAA Long Jump Championship and became the decathlon bronze medalist at the Championship of the Association of American Universities (AAU).

At the Summer Olympics in Melbourne (1956) he took third place in the 110 meter hurdles.

After graduating from Duke University, he joined the Navy and was a naval pilot (1959-65). Then, for 28 years, he worked as an American Airlines pilot, retiring in 1993.
