List of Oscar Award Winners for Best Foreign Language Film from India

Satyajit Rai is the author of three of the 49 films nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film from India

The American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences ( Oscars ) award category for Best Foreign Language Film is intended to award feature films produced outside the US jurisdiction and with predominantly non-English or dialogue languages [1] . As a competitive “merit award”, she first appeared at the 29th Oscar award ceremony, held in 1957 [2] . Earlier, in 1948-1956, foreign-language films were awarded 8 times with the “Honorary / Special Oscar”. The award is presented to the director, and the official winner is the country whose film won.

The selection of the film for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in India is under the jurisdiction of the [3] [4] . The first application from India in this category was submitted by AMPAS in 1957, for which film “ Mother India ” [4] [5] [6] was selected. The picture was the first of several films in India that reached the shortlist of the nomination, losing one vote to the winner of this year's film Federico Fellini's “ Nights of Cabiria ” [4] .

Since 1984, India has been competing for this category annually, with a single pass in 2003, when the federation decided that not one of the potential candidates has sufficient level to compete with applications from other countries [7] [8] .

By the end of 2015, India claimed the Oscar for Foreign Films with 51 films, most of which use Hindi as the main language of dialogue [5] . In addition, the list contains eight films in which the main language is Tamil [4] , three in Marathi , two films in Bengali and Malayalam, and one film each, which uses the languages of Gujarati , Telugu and Urdu as the main language (several films use several languages) [5] . The champion in the number of films selected for the application is the famous director Satyajit Rai , who shot the films “Apu World” (1959), “ Big City ” (1963) and “ Chess Players ” (1977). The directors Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Mani Ratnam , Sudhendu Roy and Sh. Shankar are twice represented on the list. Indian films won the “nomination” three times [4] [5] [6] [9] [10] , but they never won the category [6] .
