He graduated from the theological seminary .

For some time he was a sacristy of the Moscow Patriarchal sacristy , the sights of which he devoted several of his books to. Many pamphlets devoted to the monuments of the church history of Moscow came out from under the pen.

From 1882 to 1884 it would be the archimandrite of the Vysokopetrovsky Monastery [1] .

In 1884 he retired to Mount Athos in St. Andrew’s Russian monastery. Here he was tonsured to a schema with the name Hilarion , became a hermit confessor and remained with him until his death in 1891 [1] . He enjoyed great respect throughout the fraternity.
