Central Railroad of New Jersey ( CNJ brand name ) is an American class I railway created in the 1830s and operating until April 1976, after which it was absorbed by Conrail with several other bankrupt roads operating in the northeastern United States .

History
Elizabethtown and Somerville Railroad was established on February 9, 1831, to build the line from Elizabeth to Newark Bay to Somerville . Before Plainfield, the line was built by March 1839, and a road was connected to Elizabeth with the United New Jersey Railroad and Canal Company .
