Biography

Leopold Hübner was born on October 7 ( 19 ), 1829 in the Crimea in the estate of his father near the city of Simferopol . At the end of the course at the Simferopol Male State Gymnasium, he entered the Imperial St. Petersburg University in 1848, at the 2nd department (physical and mathematical) of the Faculty of Philosophy, whose course he graduated in 1852 with a candidate ’s degree.

Pulkovo Observatory

Having chosen astronomy as his specialty, he joined the Pulkovo Observatory as an assistant astronomer. During his stay in it, he participated in observations of Comet Biela and in determining the difference in longitude of the Pulkovo and Derpt Observatories (1854) and together with the astronomer of the same observatory V.K.Dellen produced (first as an assistant to the head of the expedition, and then the head) in 1855-1856 measuring trigonometric work on the lands of state-owned Ural mining plants, both of which determined the geographical locations of 25 points, of which Perm and Yekaterinburg were chosen as the starting points for determining the difference in longitude in the same region when trigonometric surveyors and topographers produce it works from 1863 to 1866. The instruments used by Dellen and Hübner in their definitions were the Repsold circle and 12 chronometers; and when orienting the trigonometric network that they produced on the same mining lands, the Bogoslovsk point was taken as the main point, the determination of the position of which was also their business.

In 1857, L.E. Hubner was appointed director of the Kronstadt compass (marine) observatory . The most important of his works in this position were: the study of chronometers for the Russian fleet, the verification of marine goniometers and the telegraphic determination together with Myakishev in 1868 of the Pulkovo - Kronstadt longitudes. Thanks to his studies on chronometers, it was possible to supply chronometers when they were sent to ships setting sail, a certificate indicating the effect of temperature and time on the correctness of their progress.

In 1864, he participated in the Pulkovo Congress of Russian and Foreign Astronomers, who gathered mainly to congratulate the Pulkovo Observatory on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of its existence on August 7. The last time of his service, Hübner was busy with the project of creating an apparatus for showing the residents of Kronstadt the moment of “ mid-afternoon ” by firing a cannon.

December 11, 1871 he married. In the same year, Leopold Erastovich Hubner was transferred to Nikolaev to the position of astronomer of marine astronomy, but, having not reached the place of his new appointment, he died on February 4 ( 16 ), 1872 in the city of Libava (now Liepaja ).

The scientist took an active part in the establishment of the Kronstadt confirmation school of the German-Latvian Lutheran parish, founded in 1860, and for eight years was a member of the board of this school.

He was also interested in music and repeatedly performed as a performer at charity music evenings.
