Malagasy Nile crocodile ( Latin: Crocodylus niloticus madagascariensis ) is a subspecies of the Nile crocodile found exclusively on the island of Madagascar . The Malagasy call it “voiai” ( Malag. Voay ) or “mamba” ( mamba ). Currently, the subspecies is almost exterminated by humans. The last Malagasy Nile crocodiles are found in remote places - for example, in the underground rivers of the Ankaran massif. There are still populations that live in the "sacred lakes" and are protected by a religious ban - ( fady ). Such a lake is, for example, Anivuranu , located between the cities of Ambilube and Antsiranana .
