History

For the first time, the title of Baron Dunkellin and Earl of Clanricard ( Peerst of Ireland ) was created on July 1, 1543 for the Irish feudal lord Ulic Burke (d. 1544 ), the son of Richard Moore Burke (d. 1530). His great-grandson, Richard Burke, 4th Earl of Clanricard (1572–1635), received the titles of Baron Somerhill and Viscount Tanbridge (1624), Baron Imanni , Viscount Galway and Earl of St. Albans (1628) with the rank of Peer of England . His son, Ulic Burke, 5th Earl of Clanricard (1604-1657), was a prominent royalist during the Civil War in England . In 1646, the title of Marquis of Clanricard ( Peerst of Ireland ) was created for him. Around 1650, after the death of his cousin , Thomas Burke, 2nd Viscount Burke, he inherited the title of 3rd Viscount Burke. After his death in 1657, the title of Marquis of Clanricard was interrupted. But Irish titles were inherited by his second cousin, Richard Burke, 6th Viscount Clanricard (d. 1666 ). He was the son of the Honorable Sir William Burke, third son of the 3rd Earl of Clanricard. He died without leaving his sons, the title was inherited by his younger brother, William Burke, 7th Earl of Clanricard (d. 1687 ).

His youngest son, John Burke, 9th Earl of Clanricard (1642-1722), who succeeded his older brother in 1704 , fought on the side of King James II Stuart, was taken prisoner at the Battle of Ohrim in 1691, outlawed , and his estates confiscated. In 1701, he was acquitted in accordance with an act of parliament and restored to his estates. His grandson, John Smith Burke, 11th Earl of Clanricard (1720-1782), adopted the ancient name "de Burgh" instead of "Burke". His eldest son, Henry de Burgh, 12th Earl of Clanricard (1743-1797), received the title of Marquis of Clanricard as a peer of Ireland in 1789 . After his death in 1797, the title of Marquis of Clanricard was interrupted. His younger brother, John de Burg, 13th Earl of Clanricard (1744-1808) became his successor. He was a general in the British army. In 1800, Lord Clanricard was elected one of the 28 Irish peers-representatives in the House of Lords of Great Britain. On December 29, 1800, the title of Earl of Clanricard ( Peerst of Ireland ) was created for him.

He served as Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs (1826), captain of the Yemeni Guard (1830–1834), General Postmaster (1846–1852), Lord Keeper of the Small Press (1858), British Ambassador to Russia (1838–1840) and Lord Lieutenant County Galway (1831–1874). In 1825, the title of Marquis of Clanricard ( Peerst of Ireland ) was created for him. In 1826, he received the title of Baron Somerhill from Somerhill in Kent in the rank of peer of the United Kingdom . This last title gave the Earls and Marquises of Clanricard an automatic seat in the House of Lords of Great Britain . Lord Clanricard was married to the Honorable Harriet Canning (1804–1876), daughter of British Prime Minister George Canning (1770–1827) and Joan Canning, 1st Viscountess Canning (1776–1837). His eldest son, Ulic de Burg, Lord Dunkellin , passed away in 1867 . In 1874, the 1st Marquis was succeeded by his second son, Hubert de Burg, 2nd Marquise Clanricard (1832-1916). In 1862, he received royal permission for the additional surname Canning as the heir to his uncle, Charles Canning, 1st Earl of Canning (1812-1862). Lord Clanricand later represented County Galway in the House of Commons from the Liberal Party (1867–1871). After the death of Hubert de Burgh-Cunning, 2nd Marquis of Clanricard, in 1916 all his titles faded, except for the title of Count Clanricard, who was inherited by his cousin, George Ulic Brown, 6th Marquis of Sligo (1856-1935).
