Origin

Publius Eli belonged to the noble plebeian family of Eliev , who shortly before that became part of the senatorial estate. The most senior branch of this genus was the owners of the cognomon Pet , who received a consulate from 201 BC. e. [1] . According to the Capitol fasts , Publius' father and grandfather bore the same name [2] .

Biography

The first mentions of Publius Elya in the surviving sources date back to 172 BC. e. [3] Nevertheless, the British researcher Robert Broughton suggested, based on the provisions of the law of Willie and the date of the consul of Publius Ely, that no later than 175 BC e. this noble was supposed to hold the position of praetor [4] . In 172 BC e. Publius Eli received a consulate [5] (in connection with this, Titus Livius mistakenly called him Publius Emilius Ligur [6] ); Guy Popillius Lenat became his colleague, and this was the first time that both consular posts received plebeians. In view of the threat of a major war with King Perseus, both consuls demanded Macedonia as a province, but received Liguria , where the previous year’s consul Mark Popillius Lenatus (brother of Guy) caused unrest. Publius Eli supported his colleague in his efforts to prevent the prosecution of his brother. [7] Later, he fought with the Ligurs , for which he received the Lignus agnomen [3] .

In 167 BC e. Publius Eli was among the five members of the commission that worked with Praetor Lucius Anicius Gallus on the post-war organization of Illyria . In addition to him, this commission included two praetorians (former praetors) Guy Tsitserey and Gnei Bebiy Tamfil , as well as Publius Terence Tuscivican and Publius Manilius [8] . The Illyrian kingdom supported Perseus in his war against Rome and was defeated, and therefore now the legates , being in Skodra , abolished royal power. They ordered the Illyrians, on behalf of the Senate and the people of Rome, to "be free." The territory of the kingdom was divided into three republics, which were supposed to pay Rome to file. At the same time, some communities that switched to the side of Rome during the war, the legates were exempted from taxes [9] . Later, all these lands constituted a new province [3] .

After 167 BC e. Publius Elius is no longer mentioned in the sources [3] .
