Ivan Stepanovich Melekhov (September 15, 1905 - December 6, 1994) - forestry scientist, doctor of agricultural sciences (1944), professor (1944), academician of the Agricultural Academy of Agricultural Sciences (1956), honored worker of science of the RSFSR (1967). Member of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of the 5th convocation (1958-1962) . Organizer and first director of the Institute of Forest and Forest Chemistry of the USSR Academy of Sciences .

Biography
Born in the village of Zharovikha, Arkhangelsk province.
After graduating from the Leningrad Forestry Engineering Academy (1930), he worked in the Arkhangelsk LTI as the head of the forestry cabinet and, at the same time, as an assistant (1930-1932), later as an assistant professor of the forestry department and senior researcher in the research sector (1932-1934).
At the same time he was the head of scientific expeditions of the forest group of the Northern Base of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1938-1942), the head of the Department of General Forestry (1934-1944) and the Department of Forestry (1944-1951, 1952-1958) of the Arkhangelsk State Technical University.
In 1951-1952 - Head of the Department of Forestry in the Leningrad LTA.
In 1957-1958 - Director of the Northern Branch of the Forest Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences.
In 1958-1962 - Organizer and first director of the Institute of Forest and Forest Chemistry, Academy of Sciences of the USSR (Arkhangelsk). At the same time he was a deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of the 5th convocation (1958-1962) from the Arkhangelsk region.
In 1962-1966 - Deputy Chairman of the State Committee on Forestry, Pulp and Paper, Woodworking and Forestry under the USSR State Planning Committee. At the same time (since 1962) he headed the Department of Forestry at MLTI .
In 1965-1971 - Academician Secretary of the Department of Forestry and Agroforestry VASKHNIL .
In 1971-1992 - Professor, Head of the Department of Forestry, MLTI .
He died on December 6, 1994. He was buried in Moscow at the Vostryakovsky cemetery . [one]

In Arkhangelsk, a memorial plaque was installed on the house where the scientist lived. The region hosts traditional scientific “Melekhov Readings”.
