Fazil Imamverdi oglu Najafov ( azerb. Fazil İmamverdi oğlu Nəcəfov ) is an Azerbaijani sculptor who is considered the founder of avant-garde sculpture in Azerbaijan [1] , People's Artist of Azerbaijan (2002).

Biography
Fazil Najafov was born in 1935 in the city of Baku . Najafov’s childhood coincided with the difficult years of World War II [2] .
In 1955, he graduated from the Baku Art College named after Azim Azimzade. The teachers of Nadzhafov in this educational institution were famous Azerbaijani sculptors Fuad Abdurakhmanov and Selim Kuliev [2] .
In 1961, Fazil Najafov graduated from the Surikov Moscow Art Institute , where he studied in the workshop of Nicolas Tomsky . Since the beginning of the 60s. Najafov participates in exhibitions. The most famous works of Fazil Najafov of this period are considered the sculptural composition "Explanation", and later the "Oilman", created in 1963 [2] .
In his youth, Najafov was also entrusted with the design of the House of Actor named after Abbas-Mirza Sharifzade in Baku. This work was assigned to the sculptor by the chairman of the Theater Society Mehti Mammadov . However, when Najafov’s work in the avant-garde style was completed, she met with negative criticism and accusations of “formalism” and “imitation of the West.” As a result, in the 70s [3] the work was removed from the facade of the building of the House of the Actor. Only the side part remained [1] .
Despite criticism, Najafov continued to create, creating more and more sculptures, such as “Black Moon”, “Blind”, “Angel”, “Stages of Life”, “Conversation”, “Resting Old Man”, “Thousand People”, “Prayer” "," Gemini "," Fountain " [4] . Today, a significant part of the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in Baku is the work of Fazil Najafov [5] .
In 2002, by decree of the President of Azerbaijan, Heydar Aliyev, Fazil Najafov was awarded the title of People's Artist of the Republic of Azerbaijan [6] .
In 2014, Najafov created a monument to the prominent Azerbaijani composer Kara Karaev , installed in the center of Baku [7] .
In January 2019, the presentation of the documentary “Stones Looking at the Sky”, dedicated to the work of Fazil Najafov, was held.
