Biography

He began to fight in the Stockholm club Djurgardens as a teenager. In 1929 he joined the wrestling team of Sweden, in 1931 became the champion of Sweden in Greco-Roman wrestling.

At the 1932 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, he fought freestyle wrestling in the weight category up to 61 kilograms (lightweight weight). Under the rules of the tournament, the wrestler received penalty points in clashes. The athlete who collected 5 penalty points was eliminated from the tournament. In the semi-lightweight wrestling were 10 wrestlers.

Einar Karlsson reached the final in second place. In the event of a victory over Hermanni Pihlayamyaki on points, the gold and silver medals would be played between Karlsson and the American Ed Nemir . In the case of a clear victory, Karlsson became the champion. Any defeat threw Carlsson to third place, which is what happened.

After the Olympics, he concentrated on the Greco-Roman wrestling. In 1933, he won the title of vice-champion of Europe in Greco-Roman wrestling, in 1934 received the bronze medal of the European Championship in Greco-Roman Wrestling. In 1935 he was left without medals.

At the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, he fought in Greco-Roman wrestling in the category up to 61 kilograms (lightweight); 19 people challenged the title. The tournament was held under the same rules with the accrual of penalty points.

After the fifth round, before the final round, took first place. Meanwhile, in the final round there was the following situation. Karlsson reached the final (3 penalty points), Finn Aarne Rainey and Turk Yashar Erkan (both have four penalty points), while Erkan lost in the fifth round to Rainey. In the final, Karlsson and Rainey met, and in the event of any Karlsson victory, he came out on top, in the case of any defeat he went down on the third. Rainey could count on a gold medal only in the event of a clear victory; in case of victory on points, he received a penalty score and lost to Erkan. And so it happened: Rainey was able to defeat Karlsson with only a slight advantage, as a result, Karlsson went to third place, and Erkan, the loser of Rainey, took the highest step of the pedestal.
