Biography
He was the eldest of six children of Carroll Campbell Sr., a private entrepreneur. He studied at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, but did not finish it due to financial problems. He worked as a real estate broker, led a private company. In 1970-1974 he was a member of the House of Representatives of South Carolina, in 1974 he tried unsuccessfully to become deputy governor of the state. In 1976 he was elected a member of the Senate of South Carolina. Since 1979 he was a member of the US House of Representatives. In 1980 and 1984 he led the presidential campaign of Ronald Reagan in South Carolina, and in 1988 - the Presidential Campaign of George W. Bush in the southern United States.
In 1987-1995, he served as governor of South Carolina. In 1989, he coordinated Hurricane Hugo State Headquarters. In 1993-1994 he headed the National Association of Governors. After leaving the post of governor, he was very popular (support reached 70%) and planned to become governor again in the elections in 2002, but abandoned this intention after being diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in the fall of 2001. In 1996, he was mentioned among Republican Party Vice Presidential candidates paired with Bob Dole (Jack Camp was ultimately elected). In 1996-2001, he headed the American Council of Life Insurers.
He spent the last months of his life in a center for people with Alzheimer's disease, where he died of a heart attack in December 2005. He was married and had two sons.
